We all love a day out exploring a food destination. Taking in all there is on offer in the way of tasty treats, savory delights and of course the odd tipple or too. If Covid restrictions have taught us anything, its that we can enjoy all these experiences at home. Whether we are just treating ourselves after a long week, or entertaining friends and family, we can experience a taste of Cavan from the comfort of our own home.

The past year has seen a lot of producers, restaurants and shops offering their produce online. This is a great way to support Irish businesses and even try out new food and drinks available in the Country without having to travel there. For those producers not online, it’s a good idea to find out where their produce is being sold and support them by buying locally. Here are our top spots in Cavan for buying local this year.

Chapter One Food and Living

As well as being a popular restaurant just outside Cavan town, you can also buy an array of locally produced food and of course their own homemade delights. Chapter One also has an online store where you can purchase hampers, artisan cakes, and lots more. Pop in if you are local to Cavan or order online here.

MuGurrens Artisan Butcher

Mc Gurren’s is an Award Winning Traditional Irish Artisan Butchers Shop.  Their shop first opened in Belturbet in 2002.  Mc Gurren’s has diversified over the years and is now a destination butcher shop with customers from all over Co Cavan and further afield.  All beef used is locally sourced from farmers in the Belturbet area, so you really do get to taste Cavan when you shop here. They are proud to stock local artisan produce including cheese from their neighbours Corleggy Cheese, Manor Farm Chicken and delicious jams from Moran’s Mega Jams. Make sure to stop here on your next visit to the area to stock up on fresh Cavan produce.

The Cottage Market, West Cavan

An artisan food and craft market, located in the heart of rural West Cavan in Ballyconnell. On the first Saturday of every month, from 1 – 5pm, The Courtyard of Lizzie Buggies Bar opens to an eclectic mix of stalls, representing what’s local to Cavan and surrounding areas. You will find baked goods, barista coffee, herbal pharmacy, hot food stalls, a Craft Yard bursting with creativity and The Local Green Box Cavan showcasing what’s available through its weekly food box. Enjoy music, join a workshop, sit with one of the community groups or stroll through the pub to view the local artwork. Bring a taste of Cavan home with you to enjoy!

The Good Crop Company

The Good crop company offer a range of affordable organic wholefoods including dried fruits (goji berries, mango, currants, raisins, dates, figs etc), nuts (almonds, walnuts, brazil nuts etc) seeds (Chia, pumpkin, linseed, sesame etc) pulses (lentils, beans, chickpeas) spices (vanilla bean pods, cinnamon sticks, turmeric etc..) mueslis, granola, oats, and lots more. Felix can be found in markets across the Country and he also has an online shop where you can buy your produce from. Just visit his website here.

The Green Box Cavan

the-local-green-box

The Local Green Box Cavan is a weekly food box supplied by an enterprising group of local growers and artisan food producers. Producers supply the box with seasonal, ethically grown food such as cheese, sourdough bread, artisan bakes, organically grown salads and veg, ferments, preserves, fermented foods, eggs, honey, and organic meat. They reduce their carbon footprint by working with producers from Cavan or border counties. They work collectively to reduce and eliminate packaging whilst the online ordering system eliminates food loss and food waste. Online orders are taken between Sunday morning at 12noon and close on Wednesday at 12noon. You can then collect your order from one of 2 locations in Cavan. You really can’t get fresher or more local than that!

A lot of our producers have got online ordering options but keep an eye out for those that don’t in your local retail stores. A taste of Cavan is never too far away.
