Chapter 1 Food and living is based just outside of Cavan town and it’s a perfect place to start your foodie adventure of Cavan. This destination store opened in June 2018 by Grainne and Ciaran Hourican. The couple wanted to bring a beautifully designed alternative experience, which would entice visitors from across the Country to enjoy the perfect blend of high-quality local food in a comfortable environment coupled with a unique shopping experience. This store offers a fantastic array of food, all created onsite by their highly trained team of chefs along with a magnificent selection of giftware and home furnishings.

Mac Nean House and Restaurant

If you are travelling to Cavan then you must plan a visit to Mac Nean House and Restaurant. Visit as a guest in their superb Guesthouse, as a diner in the restaurant with its strong national reputation for culinary excellence or as a student in the Neven Maguire Cookery School. Hawthorn Lodge

Immerse yourself in true Irish hospitality and produce at Hawthorn Lodge in Belturbet. Pauline will make sure that you stay is the most comfortable one when you visit this beautiful B&B in Cavan. They offer their guests an extensive breakfast menu. They have successfully completed Ireland’s TB “Taste of Place” campaign, and they are committed to sourcing local, Irish food and beverages.

At Hawthorn Lodge, they now grow and produce home-grown organic, no pesticides used, seasonal fruit, vegetables, and herbs. Freshly picked that very morning to use in the breakfast menu. They have dedicated raised beds in the grounds and often find that our guests love to explore them! The eggs that they use are from hens that roam free in a local pasture outside of the village and are lovingly cared for by a local young farmer. There really is low food miles here!


The Anglers Rest

Welcoming guests and customers since the early 1900’s, you will find this gem of a pub and guesthouse in Ballyconnell, in the heart of West Cavan. The team here invest and innovate to ensure your experience meets or exceeds your expectations. They will engage with visitors to ensure they know the special value of their visit and to make them aware of give-back and off-set opportunities in their destination. This is sustainable tourism at its finest- and all of their produce is sourced as locally as they can among the Cavan Geopark region.

The Keepers Arms

Sheila and Bryan are your hosts at the Keepers arms in Bawnboy. The bar at The Keepers Arms is the perfect place to quench your thirst and grab a bite to eat after a hard day’s walking, fishing, or sightseeing. With its inviting atmosphere and local banter, you are guaranteed an authentic Irish pub experience! You can relax over a pint of Guinness or your favourite glass of wine and if you are feeling hungry, you can choose from a varied menu of delicious home-made dishes, all produced using locally sourced produce. If you are there on a Sunday you can enjoy one of their famous roast dinners with all the trimmings, especially the garlic potatoes!


Virginia Park Lodge
